How the target search works
The image is really encoded at several quality settings and a binary search homes in on the highest one that stays under your limit — typically eight probes, a couple of seconds. If even the lowest quality overshoots, you get that result plus a warning; resizing the image is the effective fix at that point.
JPEG or WebP?
Photos already shrink well as JPEG, but converting to WebP typically saves another 25-35% at the same perceived quality, and every current browser displays it. Stay on JPEG if whatever you are uploading to only accepts JPEG.

Frequently asked questions
Can I ask for "under 500 KB"?
Yes — type 500KB, or just 500, into the target field. Values in MB such as 1.5MB work too. The tool then picks the best quality that fits.
How much smaller will it get?
A photo straight off a phone often halves with no visible difference. Images that are already compressed, or that are mostly text and line art, have much less to give.
Can I compress a PNG?
PNG is lossless, so there is no quality dial to turn. This tool converts PNG to JPEG or WebP to compress it — choose WebP if you need to keep transparency.
Can I shrink a file without losing quality?
Not by a large amount, but stripping metadata with the EXIF tool removes a few kilobytes losslessly, and resizing an unnecessarily large image is by far the biggest lossless-looking win.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything the page needs is loaded when you open it, and your photo is processed entirely on your own device. The image never crosses the network, so there is nothing to intercept and nothing stored on a server.
