Crop an image
Draw a box around what you want to keep and everything else is cut away. Lock the ratio first — 1:1 for an avatar, 16:9 for a thumbnail, 4:3 for print — and you only have to worry about position. The output size in pixels is shown live.
Cropping to a fixed ratio
Avatars want 1:1, YouTube thumbnails want 16:9, phone wallpapers want 9:16. Pick the ratio before you drag and the box keeps it no matter where you move, which saves redoing the crop when the target rejects your proportions.
Cropping is lossless
Discarding pixels does not touch the ones you keep (aside from JPEG re-compression on save). Remember that cropping reduces the pixel count, so blowing the result back up will look soft.

Does the format change?
No. A JPEG comes back as a JPEG and a PNG as a PNG, transparency included.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything the page needs is loaded when you open it, and your photo is processed entirely on your own device. The image never crosses the network, so there is nothing to intercept and nothing stored on a server.
