Why photos come out sideways
Phones and cameras store the pixels the same way round every time and record how you were holding the device in the EXIF Orientation field. Apps that ignore that field show the photo on its side. This tool honours it when loading and bakes the rotation into the pixels when saving, so the result looks right everywhere.
Fixing a tilted horizon
The angle slider adjusts in half-degree steps. Rotating by a free angle leaves empty corners, so pick a background colour or trim them off afterwards with the crop tool.
When flipping helps
Selfies are sometimes saved mirrored, which reverses any text in the shot; a horizontal flip puts it right. Designers also flip a composition as a quick way to check its balance.
Frequently asked questions
Do quarter turns lose quality?
No. Rotating by 90, 180 or 270 degrees just rearranges pixels. A free-angle rotation resamples the image and softens it very slightly.
Will the new orientation stick everywhere?
Yes, because the pixels themselves are rotated rather than an EXIF flag being rewritten, so apps that ignore EXIF still show it correctly.
Can I rotate a batch?
This page edits one image at a time. To normalise a batch of mixed orientations, run them through the EXIF tool, which applies the orientation correction automatically as it loads each file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in mobile browsers on iOS and Android: pick a photo from your camera roll, edit it and save the result straight back to your device. iPhone HEIC files are read directly.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything the page needs is loaded when you open it, and your photo is processed entirely on your own device. The image never crosses the network, so there is nothing to intercept and nothing stored on a server.
